The letter was originally with the author's presentation copy of his book entitled 'Freedom and independence for the golden lands of Australia' to Rev. A.C. Geikie. In the letter the author explains his feelings on the question of the colonies, and requests opinion on his work etc.

Lang was born in Scotland, received his MA (1820) at Glasgow University and arrived in Australia in 1823. He established the first Presbyterian Church in Australia (Scots Church, opened 1826) and was a member of the Council and Legislative Assembly (1859).
